Tanti Hill's Biography
RAKU is the ancient Japanese method of firing pottery. Each pot is placed in a gas kiln and fired to 1800F. Immediately the piece is removed from the kiln with tongs while red hot and placed in a metal container full of combustible materials, like paper or sawdust. The combustible material ignite immediately, the flames and the smoke hit the piece in different directs and react with the glaze to create very unique colors.
Then the container is sealed and this exposes the pot to a reduced oxygen atmosphere, so more glaze formation will take place. After 10-15 min. the piece is removed from the container and a lot of cleaning is required. RAKU pieces are for decoration only.
RAKU firing is very unpredictable. No two pieces will come out the same, even if the same glaze is used on both. Each RAKU piece is a one-of-a-king piece of Art.
