Erica Putis - Artist Statement
I grew up in a small town in Vermont and spent many hours entertaining myself with creating and exploring my family’s 20 acres. As a child, my father and brother would bravely sit on our deck while lightning storms rolled in over the large mountains. I was fascinated and usually too scared to stay outside for long, but the storms, snow and green nature had a huge influence in my work as I grew up. After moving to California, I experienced an entirely new environment, new vegetation and new weather conditions.
The more I learned about geology, meteorology and science and how we are impacting our Earth, the more it solidified my drive to paint such series as, “Natural Destruction” and “Man Made Destruction.” I try to find the balance between the terrifying beauty of mother nature, the anomalies of the science world, a future with great technology and mankind’s fascination for reaching the stars. My series, “Finding a New Future,” will explore these ideas. I won’t be able to experience it firsthand, in my lifetime, but I can try to imagine what our future will look like and hope to inspire others with my paintings.
