Dan Adams Artist Statement
Being self-taught, I’m interested in the handling of the paint itself, such as how a subject is brought to life by the strokes of paint and the use of color to bring about an emotional feel between myself and whatever I choose to paint. I consider myself a “serial artist.” When I choose a subject, I will do several paintings depicting the same subject matter, still lifes, family members and yes, dogs.
I didn’t start to paint until after I was out of school. I saw an exhibit of the painter Toulouse Lautrec and after reading about him, I identified with him. At the time, I couldn’t tell a Van Gogh from a Picasso so I started buying books and studying other artists’ lives. I am inspired by their unique styles, the act of painting and even the smell of the paint.
